Faulty communication between a computer and an HP Deskjet printer may cause a number of issues to occur, such as the following:
Communication error messages may also appear on the computer screen. Some examples of communication error messages are shown below:
All of the above are symptoms of communication problems and can happen due to a variety of reasons. This document outlines the possible reasons and will help diagnose and fix the problems.
Because the cause can be any number of things, follow this document section-by-section until the problem is resolved.
Start with the following steps:
1. Disconnect the parallel
cable from the computer and printer. Print a self-test page by using the
buttons on the front of the printer. See the HP Deskjet printer manual for
instructions on printing a self-test page. If the self-test page prints, it
indicates that the printer is okay mechanically. Skip to Step 5.
2. Save your work in any
open programs, and close them. Then, simultaneously hold down the CTRL + ALT +
DELETE keys. The Close Program menu will appear. One at a time,
highlight all of the tasks in the list, except Systray and Explorer, and click End
Task. Click End Task again when a window appears asking to confirm
that program to end. This turns off all unessential programs and verifies that
other programs running at the same time are not causing the error. Try printing
a self-test page again.
3. If the self-test page
does not print, verify that the print cartridges are firmly snapped into the
carriage. The print cartridges should sit in an upright position and be locked
in place. They should not lean backward. Try printing a self-test page again.
NOTE: If the error message, "Incorrect Installation" for either the black or colour cartridge or both appears, remove and reinstall both cartridges. If the message, "Incorrect Installation" persists, try replacing both cartridges with new ones.
4. If the self-test page
still does not print and the lights on the HP Deskjet printer are flashing,
refer to the printer's manual or to the printer's Toolbox (on the main desktop
screen of Windows) to diagnose and correct the error indicated by the flashing
light pattern. If the error cannot be resolved, contact the HP Customer Care
Center listed in the printer's manual or on the HP InkJet print cartridge.
5. If the printer is
connected to the computer through an add-in device, remove the add-in device,
and connect the parallel cable to the printer directly to the port on the back
of the computer. Some examples of add-in devices are as follows:
§
Switchboxes
§
Parallel port scanners
§
External disk drives
§
External tape drives
§
Security lock keys (dongles)
§
External CD-ROM drives
Some add-in devices may interfere with proper communication with the printer.
6. Try printing again. If
the printer prints successfully, the cable may not be connected properly.
7. If the error or garbled
printing persists, turn the printer off, and exit Windows, then turn off the
computer. Disconnect and reconnect the cable to the computer and to the
printer. Make sure that the connections are firm. Turn the printer on, then
turn on the computer, and try printing again.
8. See if the printer can
print from MS-DOS (R) by following the steps below:
NOTE: The HP Deskjet 710C, 720C, and 820C series printers are Windows-only printers and need Windows running in order to print. These programs do not print directly from programs in MS-DOS(R).
a.
Turn the printer on, then turn on the computer.
b.
On the computer's desktop, click Start and Shut Down.
Select Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode,
and Yes.
c.
At the DOS prompt, type, CD\, and press ENTER.
d.
At the C:\> prompt, type, DIR>LPT1, and press ENTER.
e.
If the Resume or Paper Feed light begins to flash on the printer,
press the button next to the light once to complete the directory print.
f.
If the directory prints properly, it shows that the basic lines of
communication between the computer and printer are okay. Return to Windows by
typing Exit, and pressing ENTER. Try printing again from Windows. If the errors
or garbled printing continue in Windows, go to the Windows Troubleshooting
section.
9. If the directory does
not print, or, if it prints garbage characters, there is still a problem with
the basic communication lines between the computer and printer. Turn the
printer off, and exit Windows. Then turn off the computer. Disconnect the
printer cable, and connect the printer to the computer using a new parallel
cable. Then, repeat Step 7 above.
10. If the directory print
still fails to print, or fails to print properly, even with a new cable, try
connecting the printer to a different computer, and repeat Step 7. It is not
necessary to install a driver to print the directory from DOS. If the directory
prints from another computer, it indicates that the printer is functioning
properly, and the parallel port on the first computer is most likely the
problem. Contact the computer manufacturer to resolve problems with the
parallel port on the computer.
11. If the directory still
fails to print, the parallel port on the HP Deskjet printer may be the problem.
Contact the HP Customer Care Center listed in the printer's manual or on the
insert of the inkjet print cartridge, or take the printer to an authorized
service provider.
12. (Windows 98 and Me
only) If using a USB-capable printer, and a USB port is enabled on the
computer, try using a USB cable rather than a parallel cable to connect the
printer to the computer.
Many parallel port add-in devices are available. Some are listed below:
NOTE: The software that controls some add-in devices may take control of the parallel port on the computer. This will interfere with any other devices (such as the printer) that attempt to use the same port.
These devices may be connected between the computer and the HP Deskjet printer. With this type of connection, the add-in device and the printer share the same parallel port on the computer. Add-in devices may cause hardware or software conflicts. Because these devices are connected between the computer and the printer, they may affect the electrical signal timing, potentially disrupting communication to and from the printer, resulting in garbled printing.
If the combined length of the cables connecting the add-in device and the printer exceeds 10 feet, communication can also be disrupted. In addition, the software that controls some add-in devices may take control of the printer port interfering with any other device attempting to use the same port. In some cases, the software for the add-in device should be disabled or uninstalled. Remove all add-in devices, and uninstall the software for those devices, then try printing again.
If removal of the add-in device and its software fixes the problem of garbled printing, it does not mean the device cannot be used. The best solution is to install another parallel port card to the computer. Once the new card is installed, the add-in device or the HP Deskjet printer can be directly connected to the second parallel port. If the computer has Windows 98 or Me and a USB port, another option is to install either the printer or the add-in device on the USB port if they are USB-capable. That would make the parallel port available for the other device.
Try to resolve printing problems for the operating system using the steps below:
1. Restart Windows by
clicking Start, Shut Down, then Restart the computer. Then
select Yes. Turn the HP Deskjet printer off and on. Follow the steps
below to check the printer settings:
a.
Click Start, then Settings, then Printers.
b.
Highlight the icon for the printer, and make sure there is a check
next to Set as Default. If there is no check, click Set as Default.
c.
Highlight the icon for the printer again, and select File then Properties.
d.
Click the Details tab. Verify that the printer is set to the
correct port, usually the LPT1: Printer Port, and confirm that the computer is
set to the appropriate driver. For example, the HP Deskjet 695c printer will
list the HP Deskjet 690c series printer as the correct printer driver.
e.
Click OK, close the printers window, and try printing again.
2. Uninstall and reinstall
the printer driver according to the instructions in the User's Guide. If
the User's Guide is not available, use the search tool on the sidebar of
this Web page, and search for instructions.
Some documents refer to this process as deinstalling the printer driver. For
example, to remove the software for an HP Deskjet 870C series printer, use the
search words, "870 and deinstall," or "870 and uninstall."
For instructions to install the software, use the search words, "870"
and "install".
3. If another printer was
previously installed on the computer, and it will no longer be used, make sure
to completely remove the software for that printer. Printers that are capable
of bidirectional communication usually have status monitor software that can
take control of the parallel port and cause communication problems.
If planning to use the other printer, the best solution is to install another
parallel port card to the computer. Once the new card is installed, either
printer can be directly connected to the second parallel port. If the computer
has Windows 98 or Me and a USB port, one or both printers can be attached via
USB if they are USB-compatible.
4. Check for items in the
vicinity of the computer, the printer, or the cable that may cause
electromagnetic interference. Common items that cause electromagnetic
interference follow:
§
Noisy or faulty fluorescent lighting
§
Incandescent lights on dimmer switches
§
Radios
§
Televisions
§
Cordless telephones
§
Microwave ovens
§
Speakers
If any of these items are in the vicinity of the computer, the printer, or the cable, turn them off or move them to see if the problem disappears.
5. Look on the taskbar to
see what unnecessary programs are open. To close unnecessary programs, click
the title button on the taskbar to view a program in an active window. Then
close the program by clicking the X at the upper right corner of the screen, or
select File, then Exit. Then try printing again.
6. Check for conflicting
devices on the computer by following these steps:
a.
On the main desktop, right-click My Computer, and select
Properties.
b.
Click the Device Manager tab.
c.
Double-click Ports (COM and LPT), and
double-click Printer Port (LPT1). Depending on the computer, the wording
of these two choices may vary.
d.
If the General tab is on top, click it.
e.
If the device status area displays, "This device is working
properly," go to the next step. If not, contact the computer manufacturer
to correct the conflicts.
f.
Click the Resources tab, and check to see if the conflicting
device list area displays, "no conflicts." If conflicts are reported,
contact the computer manufacturer to correct the conflicts.
g.
Close the open windows, and try printing again.
7. If the garbled printing
problem persists, it may be necessary to disable bidirectional communication in
the printer driver. Click here for instructions on disabling bidirectional
communication for the printer.
The most common causes of garbled output, nonsense characters, or unwanted lines on printed pages are with the parallel cable. Often, the cable fails to function at all, or inadvertent error messages such as "out of paper" or "printer off-line" may occur. At times, the printer may fail to recognize a print job at all, ignoring the print command information. Listed below are the recommended specifications for parallel cables.
HP recommends using a high-quality IEEE-1284 compliant parallel printer cable no longer than 10 feet for any HP Deskjet printer. IEEE-1284 compliant parallel printer cables meet industry-wide specifications to ensure the highest level of performance and reliability. Some cables labeled IEEE-1284 "Compatible" (rather than "Compliant") may not be reliable.
The quality
standards of many third-party cables do not meet the requirements of HP Deskjet
printers even though they may have a one-year warranty and may be attractively
priced. HP
IEEE-1284 compliant parallel printer cables have the part numbers, C2950a and
C2951a.
1.
Remove paper from the IN and OUT trays.
2.
Open the top cover.
3.
While pulling on the jammed media, press the RESUME button to turn the
paper feed rollers. If necessary, release and press again on the RESUME button
to change the direction of the paper feed rollers.
4.
If Step 3 does not work, try removing as many sheets of paper as
possible from the center portion of the jammed paper.
a.
Grasp one or more sheets of paper from the center of the jammed paper
and pull on the sheet of paper.
b.
Continue pulling paper from the center of the paper jam until as many
sheets as possible have been removed from the paper jam.
c.
Use the RESUME button to turn the paper feed rollers.
5.
If the paper is still jammed, turn the printer off or remove the power
cord from the printer and then turn the printer back on or plug the power cord
in. The printer will run through a reset cycle, which may clear the paper jam.
6.
After the paper jam is cleared, verify that all scraps of paper and
any other obstructions are removed from the printer's paper path.
7.
With the paper path cleared, cycle the power on the printer. If only
the Power light is on without other lights flashing, try printing to verify
that the problem is resolved.
